  Fauna

In coastal zones the fauna is mostly hydrophilous, associated to mangrove-tree communities, lagoons and littoral marshlands. Among the terrestrial reptiles, we can find the jubo de estera (Natrix sipedon compressicauda), that is dispersed in a large area along the coastal region. The spots where vegetation is thick and luxuriant is the living place of the jutía carabalí (Capromys prehensilis), which has a fiercer temperament than other species of its kind and is typical of the central region of Cuba.
The woods are the habitat for the tocororo (Priotelus temnurus), considered Cuba's national bird owing to the colors of its feathers which are the same of the national flag.
Along the northern coast of this province one can find the fishing bat (Noctilio leporinus).
