Wild fauna has significantly diminished due to the human presence. In the caverns of the region can be appreciated a varied insect fauna. The caves serve as refuge for plenty of species of bats and birds highly important in the control of vectors harmful to agriculture and human health.
In the mouths of many rivers, even those that flow to the northern coast, one can spot one of the most singular representatives of Cuban vertebrate fauna, the manatee or sea-cow (Trichechus manatus manatus).
Although probably existing in the whole country, the Cuban little frog (Eleutherodactylus limbatus), has been spotted in four provinces, La Habana among them. This species is regarded as one of the tiniest, having a length of about 1,2 cm (0,47 in), and displays no toe pads.
