"This is the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen" were the first words pronounced by admiral Christopher Columbus when setting foot on Bariay, territory on the Holguín coast, in 1492. It is quite probable that the same phrase had been repeated by many people visiting the province and this owes to the beauty of its landscapes, beaches, and natural wonders.
There are more than 40 beaches. Guardalavaca, Esmeralda, Estero Ciego, and Don Lino are the most known to locals and visitors.
Its hotel infrastructure counts on 24 facilities, hotels, villas, and bungalows, totaling 2000 rooms. In addition, there are two national parks, namely Alejandro de Humboldt and La Mensura, the latter treasuring the highest waterfall in Cuba, El Guayabo.
Many other places of interest await the visitor. The city of Banes, considered the archeological capital of Cuba; the aboriginal graveyard Chorro de Maíta; the Taino village, where the life of the ancient inhabitants of Cuba is represented; La Silla de Gibara, an elevation which curious shape reminds of a chair; the Loma de la Cruz, a hill from which summit one can have a panoramic view of the city of Holguín; and the Mayabe lookout point, located in the tourist center having the same name, are some of those worth-visiting places. The latter exhibits a funny ass named Pancho, who is able to drink beer before the stunned visitors.
And what could be said about Cayo Saetía, a true paradise for nature lovers. It has an extension of 42 sq km (16 sq mi) and 65% of the territory is covered by woods and inhabited by a great deal of protected endemic species, which the tourist can spot everywhere.
In addition, the platform treasures excellent sea bottoms which await the lovers of snorkeling and diving to amaze them with their beauty.
